Dear Members of the CEAE Community,

The CEAE Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) committee is initiating the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Minute this semester . Much like a ‘Safety Minute’ you might have on a job site, the DEI Minute is meant to be short (no more than 250 words - which adults can generally read in 1 minute) and informative to raise awareness about DEI issues. This is one small step toward enhancing our abilities to communicate with, relate to, and respect everyone within (and beyond) our departmental community. The DEI Minute will include links to resources for further information on each topic. We are trying to generate these so that we can send them every other week. The emails will be sent from ceae-jedi@colorado.edu, and this email account will be monitored on a weekly basis by one of our committee members. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for topics. If you would like to suggest a topic or contribute a full summary and some links on a topic, please provide your thoughts via .

Thank you in advance for taking 1 minute every couple of weeks to consider new ideas related to DEI efforts. This should be the longest message you receive related to DEI Minutes!

DEI Minute: Inclusive language in Word
Language matters for inclusion. Did you know that Microsoft Word can check your writing for common biases to help you ensure inclusive language in your communications? The grammar checking helps to flag words like “mankind”, suggesting that it be changed to “humankind” or “humanity."

The feature is turned off by default; there are different ways that you can turn this on, depending on your computer and version.

On a Mac, you should be able to access Word Preferences, Spelling and Grammar, Grammar & Refinements, and then scroll down to Grammar and Style options:
