Community Voices听explores critical issues听in听manufactured housing (MH) communities听through stories of听leadership by听MH听park residents, especially grassroot activists committed to change. The project听is designed to听share information听among听manufactured housing听communities听about how听they听address issues听and听communicate听the听challenges听faced by these communities听to policymakers and others in Colorado.听CU听Boulder听students听are trained to听research,听conduct interviews and听write stories听related to听affordability, community听development, livability听and environment/climate change.听In these initial print and audio stories, we explore common issues facing听manufactured housing听park residents,听including eviction,听corporate ownership of MH parks,听COVID-related vulnerabilities,听limitations on renovations and more.听

"It was a no brainer," says Dave Weil, a massage therapist who moved to a Boulder mobile home park in the late 1990s. "I had to come up with $9,000 and the first month's lot rental, and I was in. If I hadn't had the option of living in a manufactured听home, I would have had to move out of Boulder because my听rent was approaching 50 percent of my monthly income."

听

"I听ended up struggling听to make ends meet," says Michael Peirce, after听a large corporation听bought the mobile home park where he was living听and initiated a 12-percent annual lot rental increase. "As a result, I became an activist听to help others听in similar positions."

"All the other parks residents were talking about the same things happening," says Peggy Kuhn, who helped start an HOA in her mobile home park after a large corporation bought the park.听"The vulnerable people were being taken advantage of and threatened with eviction. They would run out the older mobile home people, evict them, get rid of their homes and then听would put in a new mobile home and rent it.听My听heart just went out to these people who lost their homes."听
