The Colorado Association of School Boards presented the 2016 State Leadership Award to Lorrie A. Shepard at the state convention last week.
The award is presented to an individual whose unique leadership has made a dramatic and lasting impact on the future of education in Colorado. The Colorado Association of School Boards represents more than 1,000 school board members and superintendents statewide.
Shepard, distinguished professor and聽dean emerita, also delivered the convention鈥檚 closing talk and a conversation on formative assessments with Elliott Asp, former interim Commissioner of Education for the state of Colorado.
Jane Urschel, the association鈥檚 longtime deputy executive director, said Shepard聽always encourages school boards to take leadership in developing policies that ensured that effective teaching, learning, and testing were not 鈥渓ost in a fog of data.鈥�
鈥淒r. Shepard understood the need to exercise wisdom and caution before letting data dominate societal institutions such as our schools,鈥� Urschel said.
