Special Topics: Water and Sanitation: design for developing countries Professor Linden Spring 2017, Mon and Wed 3:00-4:15

This course will explore water treatment to combat environmental pollution issues specific to lesser industrialized countries and designs to solutions that have been developed to tackle these problems. It will also explore ecological approaches to pollution remediation and sustainability applicable to all nations.Ìý Students will understand the fundamentals behind effective remediation processes at the household and small system level, and develop/design appropriate solutions for specific international problems.Ìý Students will be able to design various household and community based systems for treating water and wastewater.Ìý Students will develop presentation and analysis skills around problems important to developing countries.

The course topics will include:

  • Intro to Pathogens and Chemical Pollutants
  • WHO Water Quality and Guidelines
  • Water Safety Plans
  • Household Water Treatment and Storage
  • Disinfection of Water
  • Appropriate Coagulation and Filtration
  • Ceramic Water filters
  • Water Distribution and Hydraulics
  • Arsenic and Chemical sorption
  • Latrines and on-site sanitation
  • Waste Stabilization Ponds and Constructed Wetlands design
  • Anaerobic Processes/Biogas generation

The book: Mihelcic et al., Field Guide to Environmental Engineering for Development WorkersÌý ASCE Press, 2009 will be required and numerous other resources will be provided electronically.

Course will include lectures, discussions and presentations and a few laboratories. Evaluations will be based on class participation, quizzes, homework, presentations, a journal article review and Laboratory project with a final presentation.
