Artist illustration of a massive black holeOur second Friday Flick is Interstellar! IMDb describes it as “A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival.” We love this film because astrophysicist (and one of the world’s leading experts on the astrophysical implications of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity) Kip Thorne served as a consultant to director Christopher Nolan to help ensure the science of space travel and black holes were as close to the real thing as possible! Thorne also collaborated with the visual-effects artists to create the most realistic visual of the film’s blackhole, Gargantua. Just look at that gravitational lensing!

Einstein's Theory of Relativity was also depicted relatively well (pun intended). Although Interstellar didn’t include radiation or spaghettification, the time dilation is puffed up for dramatic effect, and some other details aren’t quite right, the basic idea of relativity is the shining star of this film! Rent Interstellar on Amazon Prime, YouTube, Hulu and more!
