Students still are being accepted for the Summer Research Institute of the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program for eight weeks of study starting June 2 at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
A $2,400 stipend is disbursed to each student throughout the summer toward completion of a research project. Students will present their findings at a symposium, participate in a Graduate Record Examination preparation workshop and engage in cultural activities. Their research papers will be published in the McNair Scholars Journal and may be presented at a national conference.
To enter the summer institute, applicants must be registered CU-Boulder students with 60 semester hours already completed and a 2.8 grade-point average. They also must be the first generation in their family to attend college, and to meet low-income guidelines or be a member of an underrepresented group.
The program is named for black astronaut Ronald E. McNair, who died in the 1986 Challenger explosion along with CU alumnus and astronaut Ellison Onizuka. The program, established by Congress, encourages underrepresented students to pursue doctoral degrees.
