Joe Ben Wheat, curator emeritus of the University of Colorado Museum and an internationally known archaeologist, died today at St. Anthony Hospital South in Denver after a short illness. He was 81. Wheat, of Boulder, had worked at the University of Colorado Museum from 1953 until his retirement in 1986. He was a former president of the Society for American Archaeology. Wheat was an internationally known scholar and a prolific publisher of scholarly papers.

Professor Lucy Pao of the electrical and computer engineering department at the University of Colorado at Boulder has received an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award for research that may have applications in air traffic control, robotics and several other fields.

CU-BoulderÂ’s new $11.5 million hands-on engineering facility, designed to provide real-world experience to more than 1,200 undergraduates during the academic year, will be used this summer by hundreds of K-12 students and teachers across the state.

His areas of expertise are international trade, trade theory and U.S. trade policy. Maskus served a year-long appointment in 1986-87 as a special adviser to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. He conducted trade studies and advised upper-level department officials.

The Alumni Association of the University of Colorado at Boulder will hold Reunion Fest '97 the weekend of June 20-22. ´ºË®ÌÃÊÓƵ 400 alumni and families are expected to attend the weekend of events in Boulder for members of the graduating classes of 1987, 1982, 1977, 1972, 1967, 1962, 1957 and 1952. Chancellor Richard L. Byyny named the two finalists on Friday. Both candidates, John Bernhard and Paul Tabolt, hold administrative positions in the CU system.

University of Colorado at Boulder astronomers will share current scientific knowledge and discuss the lore of the heavens in summer star talks in Fiske Planetarium. The live presentations, suitable for adults and children over age 8, will feature talks by CU-Boulder astronomers who will provide illustrations using the star projector and other equipment in the star theater. Each presentation will include time for questions from the audience.
