Asian Studies Minor

The minor in Asian Studies allows students to engage in interdisciplinary study of Asia, adding an important global focus to their primary studies. While the minor does not grant credit for foreign language, students are encouraged to study abroad, and are able to gain a strong foundation in knowledge of the Asian world through a vast array of fascinating coursework. The Asian Studies Academic Advisor and Faculty Advisor strongly encourage thematic or regional concentration, and are available for help in customizing the minor.

Requirements for the Asian Studies Minor:

Total Credits: 21 credits minimum
Upper-Division Credits: 12 credits (usually four 3-credit courses)

Core Course Requirements:

Traditional Asian Civilizations: Two courses covering two different civilizations
Modern Asian Civilizations: One course
ASIA 2000 Gateway to Asian Studies: One course

Electives:

The remaining credits can be fulfilled through a variety of elective courses.
One of the upper-division courses may be ASIA 4830 (Senior Thesis or Project), but it is not required for the minor.

Study Abroad Credits:

Up to 9 credit hours earned through study abroad can be applied toward the minor.

Language Study:

3 credit hours from studying an Asian language (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Hindi/Urdu, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, or Tibetan) can be applied to the lower-division traditional Asian civilization requirement or one of the upper-division electives (depending on the level of the language course).

ASIA 2000 Gateway to Modern Asia:听Exploring Regional Connections and Divergences. Introduces main themes and intellectual approaches used in Asian Studies through a transdisciplinary perspective focusing on interactions and links between geographic regions and national boundaries. Presents Asia as a concept, a powerful imaginary geography and historically dynamic construct that has shaped/been shaped by global patterns of economic development, nation building, war and diplomacy, colonialism and aspirations for better lives. Required for Asian Studies majors and minors. *Approved for the arts and sciences core curriculum: Human Diversity.

Students take two听introductory courses, choosing one from each of two different civilizations (East Asia, South Asia, West Asia, etc.); 6 credit hours minimum, lower division.

Traditional Civilizations courses can explore East Asian, South Asian, West Asian, Southeast Asian and Tibetan/Himalayan and other civilizations. These courses tend to be lower division introductory courses offered by the Asian Studies cognate departments (Anthropology, Asian Languages and Civilizations, Geography, History, Religious Studies and many other Departments and Programs across the University).

Modern Asian Civilizations courses can explore East Asian, South Asian, West Asian, Southeast Asian and Tibetan/Himalayan and other civilizations. These courses tend to be upper division courses that dive deeper into a variety of aspects of Asian civilization. Many of these are offered by Asian Studies cognate departments (Anthropology, Asian Languages and Civilizations, Geography, History, Religious Studies and many other Departments and Programs across the University).

Students take at least 3 courses (9 credits, upper division). Upper-division credits are required for the electives, since the minor as a whole requires 12 upper-division credits. After meeting the Modern Asian Civilizations requirement, additional upper-division courses from that category may also be taken as electives. ASIA 4830 can also be taken as an elective.
