This spring, Kelsey Simpkins (MJour) left her position as a science and news writer in media relations at CU Boulder after more than three years, where she was a 2023 Hermes Creative Awards gold winner and received a 2022 Silver Pick Award from the Public Relations Society of America, Colorado Chapter. She joined Colorado’s Regional Air Quality Council, the lead agency for improving air quality in the Front Range, as its communications and programs coordinator.Ìý

Tessa Diestel (Jour’18) spent the summer reporting on the climate of hate in America as a Carnegie-Knight News21 Fellow. In addition to contributing reporting for stories on the News21 Hate in America website, Tessa was a producer for the documentary American Hate. She shared her experiences with CMCI through updates, stories, photos and more as she reported from multiple cities in four states.

This year, Shannon Mullane (MJour) joined The Colorado Sun as a staff reporter covering water issues and tribal affairs in the West. Previously, she worked as senior editor of the CMCI communications team and as a staff writer for The Durango Herald, where she received 15 awards for her reporting. She’s still based in Durango and loves exploring southwest Colorado. In the fall, Mullane won a first-place award from the Colorado Press Association in the Best Social Justice or Equity Reporting category.

After graduation, Ashley Hopko (Jour) was a general assignment reporter in Arlington, Virginia, for the Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellowship. During the pandemic, she became a Washington, D.C., freelance reporter with Urban Turf, Medscape and Greater Greater Washington. Hopko recently accepted a new job as a research and communications associate with the consulting firm Nexight Group, where she works for the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
