The www-legacy serverÌýis no longer supportable for many reasons, some of which are listed below:

  • The Solaris hardware that enables the www-legacy server is no longer supported.

  • The Solaris operating system is antiquated and maintaining it is no longer financially viable.

  • Additional resources, such as content switches, to help keep itÌýrunning are costly.

  • The campus has invested in a number of modern alternatives that better serve the need for course materials, websites,Ìýfile storage and custom programming.

  • Newer technologies provide features to help our campus community create accessible digital content.

Background information of the www-legacy server

There are two server structures under the domain, the older server is what we call www-legacy because it was the original server infrastructure created in 1996. This server essentially runs plain HTML and CGI scripts and is not capable of running modern web technologies.

In 2011, we implemented a second server that we refer to as www-Next Generation (a.k.a www-NG). The www-NG server is configured specifically to run the campus service called Web Express. Web Express is based on the Drupal CMS framework and provides a much more modern web publishing system for the campus.

When we introduced the Web Express service, we planned to run both the www-legacy and www-NGÌýservers under the domain for a few years to allow time for thousandsÌýof department sites to switch over to the new service. In order to run both server structures under a single domain we implemented what is called a 'Content Switch,' which identifies what URL path is for a site on either www-legacy or www-NG and directs the web traffic accordingly. For example, for the URL path the content switch knows to direct traffic to the www-legacy server. For the URL pathÌý Ìýthe content switch knows to direct traffic to the www-NGÌýserver for Web Express.

Now that the Web Express service has been available for 3.5 years and has over 1,000+ sites running on the platform we are ready to retire the older www-legacyÌýserver. The biggest driver for retiring this year is its noÌýlonger financially feasible for us to continue running both servers and maintain the cost of the Content Switches. More importantly, the campus has invested in a number of other new services to better support digital content and course materials.

In addition to the Web Express serviceÌýthe campus has introduced Canvas as the main Learning Management System, asÌýwell as Google Suite, Office 365 and new VM server hosting options. With all of these new services, we have the necessary modern technologies to help support the few remaining items/content on the www-legacyÌýserver and can eliminate the extra cost and resources of running it.

If you have further questions about this retirement or about the WWW Legacy service, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone).

We also encourage you to review the other service options provided to campus.
